At The Chesterfield Brand, we are absolutely fascinated by leather. You have to smell it, you have to feel it, only then do you know if you have a beautiful piece of leather in your hands. To create that soft, supple leather again and again and then to transform it into a stylish and functional leather bag that you can enjoy for years on end, takes a lot of work. And that is exactly what we do at The Chesterfield Brand.

At our office we sometimes say: "with a Chesterfield bag, having it is the beginning of the fun". A leather bag is supposed to last. And that is exactly the beauty of the Wax Pull Up leather that we use. Because even if the leather wears down, one brush with our leather wax and your bag will look like new again. Or not, because while some people like a new-looking leather bag, for others a leather bag that looks lived-in is the ultimate look, you decide!

Creating this unique leather requires craftsmanship, attention and passion. For this we work together with several suppliers from India, our leather partners. Through years of cooperation, daily contact and frequent factory visits, together we are able to build something very beautiful. For us it is not a goal, but a requirement that every link in the chain benefits from the production of our bags. To ensure this, we only work with SA8000 and/or SEDEX certified factories.

Also, all the leather we use meets the REACH standard and a large part is already vegetable (i.e. chrome-free) tanned, also called wet white tanning. In order to make the tanning process as sustainable as possible in other respects as well, we work together with LWG-certified tanneries. LWG (Leather Working Group) is a non-profit organisation that focuses on the environmental impact of leather production worldwide. Among other things, it looks at energy consumption, water use and CO2 emissions. Currently, 80% of the leather we use is tanned in LWG-certified tanneries. Our aim is to have 100% of the tanneries we work with LWG-certified.

The hides used for our products come from different countries, but mainly from India and Brazil. We use cow leather for 90% of our products, the remaining 10% is made from buffalo leather. What many people do not know is that leather is a by-product of the meat industry. For us, this is the perfect opportunity to turn it into a beautiful and sustainable product. By processing these cowhides in different ways, we get different types of leather.

A cowhide can be divided into three layers: the grain layer (the Grain), a middle layer (the Junction), and the hide layer (the Split). The quality and durability differ per layer. For all products of The Chesterfield Brand, 100% Full Grain leather is used, also known as Full Grain. Full Grain leather is the layer with the most natural character; it is the strongest and most durable layer. Since this is the highest quality you can get, it is also the most expensive leather. Full Grain leather is made to last a lifetime, is resistant to rain, and is the only leather type that becomes more beautiful as it is used.

Through years of experience, we have developed our Cow Wax Pull Up leather. This leather is produced with natural wax and oils, which gives a uniquely soft and supple result. Moreover, this type of leather can easily be treated with this wax, which results in a durable product that will last for years.

During the tanning process the hide is converted into usable leather. This process determines the quality of the leather, how it looks and how it will feel. And leather tanning is not easy. It takes a lot of time and knowledge and no two skins are the same. For us this is not only a nice challenge, it also ensures that every product in our collection is unique!

But, how does this work exactly? The skins that arrive at our leather partners are selected and prepared for the tanning process. For this, the hides are cleaned and soaked in a special immersion bath to remove hair residues and excess dirt. Next, the hides are tanned in large wooden barrels. The structure of certain proteins in the hide is worked to create a suitable and durable piece of leather. Various tanning agents can be used for this process. The majority of leather in the world is tanned chemically. We also use chemically tanned leather for part of our collection. In addition, for an increasing part of our collection, a vegetable tanning method is used (also called Wet White Tanning). This tanning method is more environmentally friendly because only natural products are used. This technique gives the leather a white glow, hence the name 'Wet White Tanning'.

After tanning, the leather is pressed to get the moisture out, after which it can be split. When splitting the leather, the top layer and bottom layers are split from each other. This top layer is the strong and even layer that is suitable for production. After splitting, the leather is washed in the vats once more. This time to create the right colour and to make the structure of the leather smooth. Then it is time to dry the leather. This can be done by pressing the leather or stretching it on grids. In India, we have the option of drying the leather in the sun, which gives the leather an even deeper colour.

At The Chesterfield Brand, this is the most frequently used type of leather. After pressing, the leather is manually coloured with aniline dyes impregnated with natural oils and waxes instead of paints and pigments. This soft finish ensures that these dyes won’t remain on the skin, but are pulled into its pores, creating the natural vintage look. As a result of waxing rather than spraying, we created a very durable product that maintains its quality and colour.

For the Novum Series, only the finest full-grain leather is used. A very exclusive type of leather with a firm yet supple look and feel, which is unique for leather that has been tanned in a vegetable manner. At the end of the production process, the leather is hand-waxed, creating the deep and rich color. The specialized leather, the high-quality details, and the refined finish ensure a unique final product with a modern and luxurious appearance.

The Serene Series is crafted from premium Drum Dyed Dry Milled leather that is naturally supple, lightweight, and soft. Its gentle tones create a calm, refined aesthetic, while the dry milled process reveals a beautifully natural grain with subtle depth and dimension. With its signature high-quality finish, the Serene Series offers effortless elegance for everyday use.

This type of leather is made of buffalo leather. Buffalo leather is generally a harder and stiffer type of leather. However, in cooperation with our factory, we have developed a special treatment process that keeps the leather supple. Antique buff crumbled leather is sprayed by hand in the correct colour. This gives the leather a unique two-tone colour effect. This creates a beautiful vintage look. For antique buff crumbled leather, the leather gets more 'character' the more it is used. The bag therefore only becomes more beautiful.
